British Selling Pirate Kodi Boxes Arrested in UK

An individual who was caught selling devices with piracy-enabled Kodi custom builds was arrested in the United Kingdom. The 32-year-old top manager was detained by police, and according to media reports, both him and his wife have been subjected to death threats online.

Like everywhere in the world, the United Kingdom also blocks more and more piracy websites. As a result, set-top Android devices loaded with Kodi and third-party addons are becoming more and more popular there. Once proper configuration is installed, these devices offer a lot of free content, such as live TV, latest movies, PPVs, etc. Not everyone can manage to set them up on their own, so many people prefer to pay someone else to do the work for them.

Today, lots of people place adverts on eBay, Amazon, local papers and Facebook, offering to program Firesticks and similar platforms to enable them receive pirate content. If they sell a pre-programmed device, they usually charge double the price of the basic hardware. Ooberstick was the online company that offered quite expensive devices with a custom build of Kodi. Apparently, the devices were shipped out only partly configured, and the customers had to complete the installation themselves. Besides, it looks like the company also offered IPTV service.

The UK police arrested Ooberstick director a few days ago. Several officers and an individual representing Sky TV attended the arrest of the 32-year-old man. It is suggested that the police were looking for servers and the datacenter. The raid resulted in the seizure of computers, phones and other hardware, but none of Android devices.

A fraud and copyright infringement investigation was started, but the infringer was eventually freed on bail. Aside from a police inquiry, the man also has other problems to face: there are plenty of complaints from Ooberstick customers about the devices which no longer work as advertised and about delivery issues. After the company’s director was served with a cease and desist order from Sky, the company websites and Facebook pages were taken down, so people who ordered the boxes feel they’ve been left in the dark. Perhaps, this explains why the man, his business partner and even family receive online death threats.

The arrested man explained that he believed to run an entirely legal business, since streaming for the end user is legal as no download occurs.

No avatarPerhaps by "no download occurs" he meant to say no data was saved by the end user.

twomeya avatarIt will get more difficult to police this, especially with vpn's being so accessible to the masses. I don’t use the boxes myself, i just have an old windows machine connected to my main telly that acts as an entertainment unit, it self-manages for the most part & I can remote onto it from my phone, i have VeraCrypt encryption locally so the contents are fairly safe. My kodi install has some of them 3rd party streaming extensions i found some of them to be unreliable, often indexed incorrectly, no streams available or lags during peak times. Sky's ondemand doesn't offer the full range of programming so if you miss scheduled content its gone, these kodi boxes offer a solution to this perhaps sky should invest more time into this rather than chance down tech enthusiasts. Music piracy saw a dramatic decline in the early 00' after the release of iTunes and soon all music distributors began offering a similar type service

n2kmaster avatar"A fraud and copyright infringement investigation was started"......on what tho? Dude sold a preloaded Kodi box......When you sell a computer thats been installed with windows and flash and codecs and vlc and such, you're doing the EXACT same thing. Its not illegal to install like utorrent or anything like that. The part about the kodi box legal crap that pisses me off is that their main complaint is the ability to watch shows from other countries. Well.....if you youtube in Canada for BBC shows, does that mean you've broken the law? Of course not. The censorship war, seems to be more about picking and choosing the easier targets than actually dealing with their problem.

No avatarThere is nothing illegal about any Kodi boxen. Firstly, nothing gets downloaded, so there's no issue there. Secondly, all TV feeds are provided via Internet feeds. If they really didn't want people to access their feeds, they wouldn't post them in the first place. There is NOTHING illegal here!!!!!
