USTR Released Yearly Notorious Markets Report

The American government agency has issued its yearly list of the largest piracy portals and copyright-infringing venues, calling on foreign governments to take action against popular illegal file-sharing sites like The Pirate Bay. The USTR also described stream-ripping as an emerging threat.

The United States Trade Representative issued its yearly “Out-of-Cycle Review of Notorious Markets”, listing several sites alleged of being involved in online piracy and counterfeiting. The reports uses information received from the copyright owners, including RIAA and MPAA. The agency admits that the list does not reflect legal violations and aims to motivate owners and foreign Governments to act against piracy.

Unsurprisingly, The Pirate Bay is listed in the review as one of the primary offenders, continuing to facilitate illegal sharing of copyright content. The USTR stressed the TPB’s resilience and importance as one of the longest-running pirate venues. The report also mentions other prominent torrent sites like Rutorrent, RARBG, 1337x.to and us, of course.

It was the first report where the USTR included a stream ripping service – YouTube-MP3.org, describing it as an “emerging threat”, even though such phenomenon has been around for many years now. The mention follows a report from earlier in 2016, where concerns about stream ripping have also been expressed. It must be said that major music labels have recently filed a lawsuit against the stream ripping service.

Aside from individual websites and services, the agency mentioned some hosting services that “have become piracy havens”, including the Swiss company Private layer for hosting some infringing websites through a legal loophole. The USTR even included Alibaba’s Taobao.com to the list as selling counterfeited products.

BaBaDapper avatarOh let me put that comment back!

"The USTR even included Alibaba’s Taobao.com to the list as selling counterfeited products".

LOL so not eBay? Ah but that would be a US company wouldn't it United States Trade Representative people!?!

BARBAZ avatarBaBaDapper

Ebay, lol. Love that point.

How about:
PayPal for facilitating Payment for "dodgy goods"? Money Laundering in the plainest and simplest sense "methinks".......OH NO! another American Owner, who happens to be also bearing the cost for the American Space Programme and it's Future needs (wink wink nudge nudge.....) No-one is coming after PayPal for money laundering in the USA under the current conditions......not a snowball in hells chance!

Amazon too, loads of spurious products on there from China, Singapore et-al.

USTR didn't list GEEK though? Maybe that site's got an "influential USA favoured ownership" too?

Let's face it anyway, they'll ALWAYS be three steps behind the sharers and torrenters.

If they'd all make their sh1t cheaper (downloads) and not try to rip people off and then we'd be happier to pay I guess?

If a movie was pitched online at maybe US$1.00 or £1.00GBP, ( the price of an outdated or second hand DVD from BlockBusters....)
£1.00 GBP per music Album,
15 to 20 "pennies" for a Music Single etc;......and so on.

If the pricing was like that it would mean (I believe) that it is 'more likely tha not' that they would actually get more income 'cos they'd be selling OBSCENE VOLUMES through downloads.

They need to get real....there is NO TRUE "PHYSICAL" goods cost to a Download after the item is put on a server, and the selling site runs the servers anyway.

The whole downloads market needs a form of "devaluation programme", sort of like resetting a currency to align the exchange rate when it has gone tits-up in a single Countrys economy that uses that Currency. It CAN be done, very easily, and I suspect most artists would prefer their fans/buyers to be paying less and get back to selling huge numbers like the 1980's era, but I believe it won't happen until the Artists are able to wrest back control from the Conglomerates. As well as that, Movie producers have to also CHOOSE to work on the economy of scale principal to make a reasonable profit, and they cash-in big time if they make a good movie and not use the current price fixing model which allows them to hedge their bets.
(We may even avoid a lot of sh1te movies that way too with any luck, lol).

My belief is (though I haven't checked this in a little while, to be fair & honest) that if you check out the prices on, for example, an Indian based download service and then compare how much cheaper it is than the cost in the USA and UK or Europe etc; there is a huge price difference.

Just like the Mobile Phone providers already do in developing countries, there is a HUGE real terms cost difference compared to what we pay in our home countries for the Exact Same services on the same infrastructure too. (I wonder if it would even be cheaper to get a mobile service elsewhere and use roaming in your home country? That'd really be something eh..lol)
It is way cheaper in those developing Counties, 'cos the Mobile Operators are smart enough to work on the Economy of Scale principle, and they price point their products in line with a "certain" percentage of the normal unskilled workers wage in any given country/marketplace to ensure they capture the volume in the population and that way they make a ton of money from the economy of scale principal and it gives them a bigger base to sell other products to.

If only the mobile operators could get FULLY into downloads retailing in a very big way, globally, I'd be surprised if it didn't force Prices down and re-align the market to the level it should be.
(If I remember correctly, the US Authorities are sniffing around the merger anouncement for a Content Maker and Mobile Services Operator already, which definitely stinks of a vested interest by some companies to protect the "market Monopolies" of a few conglomerates not wanting downloads prices to drop...)

They wonder why Torrents and File-sharing still flourishes..........pfft! Pretty obvious really?

That's got my "downloads economics and pricing by monopolising Conglomerates" frustration off my chest anyway, lmao.

Thanks USTR

roguenarok avatarThis maybe off-topic but I got to ask. Why I can't login in my phone? Everything was okay a couple months back but now I can't login my ET account on my phone. It's getting annoying with all the ads popping up like a housefly flying around your face.
